Curated by Carole Haensler in collaboration with Laura Pomari

Luigi Pericle, Untitled (Matri Dei d.d.d.), 1966, mixed media on masonite, Biasca-Caroni collection,

MASI Lugano presents the first retrospective in Switzerland devoted to the enigmatic artist Luigi Pericle (1916–2001), whose recently rediscovered works are the focus of an important project by the Archivio Luigi Pericle association aimed at their conservation, study and promotion. Born in Basle, but of Italian descent, Luigi Pericle played an active role in an important chapter of the art of the second half of the 20th century, expressing himself through his own personal style of informal abstract art and unique working techniques. During the early 1950s, he moved to Ascona with his wife, attracted by the spiritual aura of Monte Verità. Having achieved international acclaim, while eschewing categorization and proving himself both a professional artist and a talented illustrator, in late 1965 he firmly resolved to abandon the art system. However, he continued to produce works and study the civilizations of the past, Eastern philosophies and languages, esotericism, astrology and natural medicine, which offered infinite sources of inspiration for his creative research. The exhibition traces Pericle’s abstract art from the 1960s to the 1980s with a carefully curated selection of documents, paintings and ink drawings, which highlight the development of his unique expressive language.

The exhibition is held in cooperation with the Villa dei Cedri museum in Bellinzona.
